Obituary of Edmundo S. Nunez, M.D.

Edmundo S. Nunez, M.D., 93, of Troy, N.Y. passed away peacefully at home in the loving care of family on July 24, 2025.

He was born on July 5, 1932 in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Philippines and was the son of the late Crescencio S. and Maria Rosario (Soriano) Nunez.

Edmundo was 9 when Japan invaded the Philippines during World War II.  He persevered and went on to attend The University of Santo Tomas in Manila and graduated from UST Medical School in 1955.  He flew to the United States on a temporary work visa in 1958 and started work at the Leonard Hospital in Troy (Lansingburgh).

It was at Leonard where he met his wife of 65 years, Beverly Vertefeuille.  They fell in love and Bev and Ed married in 1960.  Soon after they started a family.

Immigration laws in 1962 sent Dr. Ed, now the father of a one-year-old daughter and another baby on the way, back to the Philippine Islands.  He endured a 30 day voyage on a cargo ship to start a two-year process of petitions to return to his family in the U.S.

Paperwork finally approved, Edmundo returned to the U.S. by plane in 1964 to reunite with Bev, daughter, and 1 ½ year-old son, who he had yet to meet.

Doc offered his medical skills in many ways as his family grew.  He operated a family practice in Cohoes, NY while working as an emergency room physician at Cohoes Memorial and St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy.

Dad often referred to his “curriculum vitae”, trying many jobs “chalking it up to experience”.  He was a physician/partner at Physician’s Health Care in Cohoes, attending physician at Saratoga Harness racetrack, and company doctor at Albany Felt Co.

He took the challenge of caring for prisoners at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock, N.Y., showed compassion for the elderly at Van Rensselaer Manor in Troy, and helped students at Hoosick Valley Central School District.

His most enjoyable job was as medic for a logging company in the Philippines, but the work he was most proud of was his 14-year career in the United States Army Reserve.

Enlisting at age 50, Dr. Nunez rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel Nunez, and was activated during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  His deployments took him to Honduras and Germany.

Dad worked into his 80’s, his last job giving physicals to military personnel at Albany MEPS (military entrance processing station).

Amazingly, Doc had time for many activities outside of work.  He loved all forms of exercise, even shadow-boxing until the last year of his life.  He spent hours and hours on tennis courts and also enjoyed XC skiing, swimming, hiking, boating, biking, snowmobiling, fishing and golf.

He loved curling and was a member of the Albany Curling Club.  Dr. Ed was also a former Director of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

He traveled the world multiple times with family and again with friends.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed trips around the U.S. visiting historical sites and landmarks.  He loved beaches, lakes, mountains and forests.  He spent parts of many winters in Florida, where he made new and cherished friendships.  Dad with Mom enjoyed dining out…and the more, the merrier!

Dad’s favorite spot away from home was the family cabin in Woodford, Vermont.  Countless memories were made “up at camp” with more to come.  Dad always looked forward to a scotch, a campfire, and a song on the player piano.

“Pop” adored his grandkids and rarely missed a major game, event, performance or graduation.  His family was his nourishment, his spark, and his purpose.

Edmundo was predeceased by granddaughter Noell Kimberly Hardy, and five younger Nunez brothers: Jose-Manuel, Orlando, Crescencio Jr., Arthur, and Ray. 

In addition to Beverly, Edmundo is survived by his children, Kimberly (Joe) Hardy, Edmund (Tricia) Nunez, Raymond (Allison) Nunez, Pamela (Brian) Hume, and Karen (Matt) Miller.

Beloved brother of Alita Lilia Nunez Bancolita, Rose Marie Nunez Paredes, Mildred Nunez Palacios and Gladys Nunez Perez.

Cherished “Pop” to Jordan (Dakota) Drake, Logan Hardy, Gabriela (Jordan) Nunez-Mohler, Edmund R. Nunez, Joseph Nunez, Taylor Nunez, Zachary Nunez, Morgan Hume, Peyton Hume, Nicole Miller and Christopher Miller.

Also survived by sister-in-laws Madeline “DeDe” Frier, Norma Nunez, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at St. Augustine’s Church, 25 115^th Street, Troy, NY with a Livestream available then at https://youtube.com/@staugustinesparishtroyny?si=O0jEuFrBruinI4lZ

Interment with Military Honors following at 11:15 a.m. in St. John’s Cemetery, 250 Cemetery Rd., Troy.
