Obituary of Carlo Cherubino

Please share a memory of Carlo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dateline:  Colonie, New York

Carlo Cherubino, 71, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a brief illness. Born in Siderno Marina, Reggio Calabria, Italy, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria Cherubino.

After emigrating to the United States in 1965, he attended Cardinal McCloskey High School where he started his running career. He pursued his teaching degree at the University at Albany, where he set several records in cross country, and his talents led him to compete in the 1976 Olympic Trials. He was ranked the fourth best 30-kilometer runner in 1979 by his favorite magazines, Runners World and Track & Field.

Upon completing his master’s degree in education at the University, Carlo taught Spanish at the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany for 46 years. During that time, he continued to pursue his passion for sports by coaching soccer for 26 years and assuming the role of Athletic Director to oversee the growth of the school’s athletics program. Carlo took pride in having created the school’s indoor/outdoor track & field and cross-country programs, and in coaching these teams to success, earning more than 60 titles in the NY State Public High School Athletic Association, Section II Colonial Council.

Outside of work, he enjoyed spending time with his family, and bicycling with his friends, who call themselves “former runners on gears” or “Frogs.” While at his home, he could be found watching track meets or rooting for his favorite soccer team, Juventus. He liked cooking for his family, gardening, caring for his dogs and tending to his fig, lemon and apricot trees.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Melissa A. Cherubino (Ashline) and his stepdaughter, Kristina Cherubino. He was the devoted brother of Rosanna Bongiorno (Felice), Elena Giglio (the late Giacomo) and Roberto Caricari. He was “Zio Carlo” to Adriano Bongiorno (Vanessa), Sabrina Mason (Greg), Giacomo Giglio, Daniele Giglio (Christine), Teresa Giglio and Antonio Caricari.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 am St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Rd. Clifton Park, NY 12065.

Calling hours will be from 3-6 pm Tuesday in the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Rt. 9 Clifton Park, NY 12065.
